On Wednesday, Angelina Jolie made a stunning appearance at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, where she donned an all-white ensemble that exuded elegance. At the Critics Choice Awards, she embraced a more ethereal look, arriving in a sheer nude dress. Her signature blonde locks cascaded down her back, and she added a bold red lip to elevate the outfit's impact.Jolie is nominated for Best Actress for her performance in Maria, a role that has garnered attention despite the film's limited recognition in other categories. Maria received only one Oscar nomination, for Best Cinematography, leaving Jolie's performance largely overlooked. This may mark one of her final appearances at an awards show, given that the film did not secure any nominations from the Screen Actors Guild. In a January interview with W Magazine, Jolie opened up about how deeply she immersed herself in the role of the iconic opera singer Maria Callas. She spent months learning singing, Italian, and opera techniques in preparation. Throughout filming, director Pablo Larraín and the team treated her as a true singer, providing constant support with pianos and coaches. However, she also noted that her role as a mother allowed her to detach from the emotional heaviness of the film when the cameras stopped rolling.
Reflecting on Callas’ life, Jolie shared, “The more I learned about Maria, the more I felt she deserved empathy and understanding.” Jolie sought to remind the audience that Callas, in her later years, was severely criticized and isolated. Her goal with the film was to encourage viewers to reconsider Callas’ life and legacy and give her story another chance.
